What Is Climate Change?

Climate change means long-term shifts in temperature and weather patterns. While some changes happen naturally, today’s climate change is largely caused by humans — especially by burning fossil fuels. In Ghana, climate change is already affecting rainfall patterns, farming, water supply, and coastal areas.

Causes of Climate Change in Ghana

Just like in other parts of the world, Ghana contributes to climate change through:

  • Burning fossil fuels - from cars, electricity, and industries
  • Deforestation - cutting down trees for timber, charcoal, and farming
  • Agriculture - livestock and fertilizers release greenhouse gases
  • Waste - open burning and landfills release methane

Effects of Climate Change in Ghana

Ghana is already feeling the impact:

  • Irregular rainfall – affecting farming and food supply
  • Longer dry seasons & stronger heatwaves
  • Flooding in cities like Accra and Kumasi
  • Rising sea levels – destroying homes and farmlands along the coast
  • Spread of diseases like malaria due to warmer weather

What You Can Do

You can take action in many ways:

  • Plant and protect trees – especially in degraded areas
  • Use clean energy – like solar panels for homes and schools
  • Practice smart farming – like drip irrigation and composting
  • Manage waste – reuse, recycle, and avoid open burning
  • Support local eco-projects – like beach cleanups or community gardens
  • Talk about it – educate others and join climate clubs or youth groups
